Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin from the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the eyelids. It can involve the removal of excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids, as well as tightening the surrounding tissues.

The procedure can help rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes, making them look more youthful and refreshed. It is often performed to address conditions such as sagging or drooping eyelids, puffy bags under the eyes, or excess skin that obscures vision.

A Blepharoplasty offers several benefits for individuals seeking to address signs of ageing, puffiness, or sagging in the eyelids, leading to a more youthful, rested, and confident appearance. Some of the key benefits include:

Reduction of Excess Skin: Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, which may be causing hooding or sagging. This can create a more youthful and refreshed appearance to the eyes.
Elimination of Puffy Bags: For individuals with puffiness or bags under the eyes, particularly in the lower eyelids, blepharoplasty can remove or reposition excess fat deposits. This can result in a smoother and more rested appearance.
Correction of Sagging: Blepharoplasty can address sagging or drooping of the eyelids, which can impair vision and contribute to a tired or aged appearance. By tightening the eyelid tissues and muscles, the procedure can restore a more youthful and alert look to the eyes.
Improved Vision: In cases where sagging eyelid skin obstructs the upper visual field, blepharoplasty can improve vision by removing the excess tissue and restoring proper eyelid positioning. This functional improvement can enhance quality of life and safety, particularly for activities such as driving and reading.
Enhanced Confidence: By rejuvenating the appearance of the eyes, blepharoplasty can boost self-confidence and self-esteem. Patients often report feeling more youthful, refreshed, and satisfied with their appearance following eyelid surgery.
Long-Lasting Results: The results of blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting, providing patients with sustained improvement in eyelid appearance and function. While the ageing process may continue over time, the benefits of blepharoplasty can endure for many years, enhancing overall facial aesthetics.

As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries risks, which are important to discuss  with your surgeon and carefully follow all pre- and postoperative instructions to minimise risks and optimise outcomes.

The cost of Blepharoplasty varies based on factors, including the surgeon's experience and reputation, the complexity of the individual's procedure requirements, the clinic and any additional services or facilities provided.

On average, Blepharoplasty surgery in the UK can vary with costs between £2,000 to £6,000. However, this is a rough estimate and the total cost may be higher or lower depending on the previously mentioned factors. Additionally, any future surgeries required will incur separate charges.

The following are some general guidelines to help you prepare for the procedure:

Consultation with a Specialist: Firstly, you need to schedule a meeting with one of our clinic partners who specialises in eyelid surgery. The plastic surgeon or ophthalmologist will assess your eligibility for blepharoplasty and explain the procedure in detail. This is the moment to discuss your goals, medical history, and any concerns you may have.

Medical Evaluation and Tests: Next check for any necessary medical evaluations or tests recommended by your surgeon. This may include blood tests, electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), and  imaging studies like CT scans to assess your suitability for the procedure.

Avoid Certain Medications: Stop taking medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or certain vitamins and herbal products, as advised by your surgeon.

Refrain from Smoking and Alcohol: Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for a specified period before the surgery, as these can affect blood flow and the healing process.

Prepare for Post-Procedure Care: Arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery (Since blepharoplasty is typically performed under anaesthesia) and prepare your home for a comfortable recovery. Make sure that you have the necessary post-operative care instructions and supplies as advised by your surgeon.

Before surgery your surgeon will provide you with specific preoperative instructions to follow before your surgery.

Blepharoplasty surgery involves:

Incisions are carefully made along the natural creases of the eyelids to minimise visible scarring. For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, incisions are typically made in the upper eyelid crease, while for lower eyelid blepharoplasty, they may be placed just below the lower lash line or on the inside of the lower eyelid.
Excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the eyelids are removed to address specific concerns. In upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgeon may remove redundant skin and fat to reduce hooding and improve eyelid contour. In lower eyelid blepharoplasty, excess fat may be repositioned or removed to address under-eye bags, while excess skin may be trimmed to improve skin laxity.
Once the desired changes are made, the incisions are meticulously closed with sutures or surgical adhesive. Temporary sutures may be used to support the eyelids during the initial healing period.

Eyelid surgery typically lasts between one to three hours. After the surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery area until they are ready to be discharged home.

It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can return home the same day.

Pain relief will be provided should you feel any discomfort post-operation.

Most individuals take about 2 weeks off work to recover from eyelid surgery, depending on their job.

While full recovery may take several more weeks, you should be able to resume most of your normal activities and enjoy a refreshed appearance around the eyes after 1-2 weeks. You will not be able to drive for a few days.

your surgeon may advise using lubricating eye drops and wearing dark sunglasses for eye protection against sunlight and dust. Refrain from strenuous activities and sun exposure during the initial recovery period.

Here's what to expect during each period:

Immediate Postoperative Period (Days 1-3)

Expect significant swelling and bruising around the eyes, typically peaking within the first 48 hours. Mild to moderate discomfort or tightness around the eyes is common, manageable with prescribed pain medication. It's crucial to rest with your head elevated to minimise swelling and avoid strenuous activities, bending, or heavy lifting.

First Week After Surgery (Days 4-7):

Swelling and bruising diminish, and discomfort subsides. Around days 5 to 7 post-surgery, non-dissolvable sutures may be removed. Patients can gradually resume light activities like walking. Additionally, initiating gentle scar care techniques, as advised by the surgeon, is important to promote optimal healing and minimise scar visibility.

Second Week After Surgery (Days 8-14):

The eyelids regain a more natural appearance. Typically, within 7 to 10 days, patients can return to work and normal daily activities. While some sensitivity to light or temporary changes in vision may persist, these usually resolve as healing progresses.
